Blood Clotting

Populations that eat a lot of fish have substantially longer bleeding time (a standard lab test) than non-fish eating people.

The tendency to increased blood clotting is a highly underrated factor in cardiovascular disease, as well as in cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

Note: Bleeding time decreases significantly in aging, which means one has a greater tendency to blood clotting.

This is a factor in cardiovascular disease and cancer, the two main causes of death in older people.

Skin Cancer

When the sun prematurely ages the skin, this is called photoaging. This can lead to skin cancer.

Dermatologists refer to the damage the sun does to skin by several names, including photoaging, photodamage, solar damage, or sun damage.

Omega-3 fatty acids (abundant in fish oil) protect against photoaging.

Omega-3 and omega-6 (abundant in seed oils) generally oppose each other, so this could show how seed oils promote photoaging.

P.S. Corn oil promotes skin cancer in mice.

Fish oil helps to prevent it.

Fatty Liver Disease

High fat, high fructose (sugar) diet with peanut oil (high omega-6) led to fatty liver and dyslipidemia.

Substituting ALA (plant-sourced omega-3) or fish oil prevented Western diet induced fatty liver

Parkinson's Disease

Omega-3 fatty acids (abundant in fish and fish oil) could treat Parkinson's disease, by negating the effects of omega-6 fatty acids (found in seed oils).

I don't know who needs to hear this, but seed oils (restaurant oils) cause disease.

Reduce Cancer Risk

Vitamin D and omega-3 supplements, combined with a simple home exercise program, slashed cancer risk by 60 percent over 3 years.

Such a simple intervention could radically reduce cancer.

Alzheimer's

High blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids - the kind found in fish and fish oil - are associated with half the risk of Alzheimer's.

Sudden Cardiac Death

The omega-3 index, which is the fraction of omega-3 fatty acids in red blood cells, is an important risk factor for sudden cardiac death.

We think adding omega-3 from fish oil as improving the index. It does, but that's the wrong way to look at it.

Why?

Because seed oils (restaurant oils) lower the omega-3 index, regardless of the intake of omega-3.

Merely lowering linoleic acid from seed oils improves the index to optimal levels.

Does this implicate seed oils (restaurant oils) in sudden cardiac death?

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)

Coronary heart disease death rates are related to the amount of highly unsaturated fatty acids in plasma.

These fatty acids are in turn related to the amount of dietary omega-3 (fish oil) and omega-6 (seed oils).

PMID: 16387724

Note: In countries where more omega-3 (fish) and less omega-6 (seed oils) are consumed, people have lower omega-6 levels in plasma and lower rates of death from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).

When converted to arachidonic acid in phospholipids, they can generate higher amounts of inflammatory eicosanoids, such as thromboxane, leading to clotting and CHD.

Aspirin, which is known to help prevent CHD, prevents the formation of thromboxane.

Lower Death Rates

Circulating levels of omega-3 fatty acids, the type from fish or fish oil, are associated with 15 to 18 percent lower all-cause death rates.

No association seen for alpha linolenic acid, the plant-based omega-3.

Men with Previous Heart Attack

A Mediterranean diet with high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and less omega-6 reduced mortality by 70 percent in men with a previous heart attack.

(This is far better than any statin.)
